Cosmetic Question: How Have Aesthetic Procedures Evolved?

One of the first things others notice about you is the quality of your smile, and it’s natural to want to make a positive impression. But if your teeth are chipped, cracked, or stained, you might worry about being judged for your appearance.

Thankfully, your dentist can help by providing one or more cosmetic treatments to upgrade your grin. Today, these services are considered safe for most patients and are minimally invasive, but that hasn’t always been the case. Continue reading to learn more about the history of cosmetic dentistry and how far it has come!

How Old is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dental procedures are intended to help improve your appearance more than your oral health, which many patients consider a more contemporary approach to dental care. However, scientists have discovered that even ancient humans sought ways to enhance their grins.

For example, archeological findings have revealed that ancient Egyptians used precious materials, such as gold and ivory, to create dental crowns and bridges. Other cultures, like the Etruscans of ancient Italy, replaced missing teeth with restorations made from these and other local materials, such as seashells. The ancient Romans also valued dental care and their appearance, and created an unusual mixture containing urine, high in ammonia, to whiten their enamel.

When Did Cosmetic Dental Procedures Improve?

Throughout the Middle Ages, dental care was often provided by barbers, who often filed teeth to shape them or applied acid to teeth to brighten them. Unfortunately, these early cosmetic practices also significantly damaged enamel, increasing the rate of cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss.

Then, around 1770, the first set of porcelain dentures was invented, and in 1820, a goldsmith named Samuel Stockton mounted dentures to 18-carat gold plates, resulting in ongoing improvements to aesthetic procedures. In the 1800s and 1900s, acrylic resin and other plastics were invented, which propelled dental materials and techniques into the future.

Are Contemporary Cosmetic Dental Services Safe?

Thanks to today’s state-of-the-art technology, cosmetic dental procedures are considered safer and more effective than ever before. Most of these treatments don’t require needles or numbing and are considered safe for most people when provided by a qualified professional, such as your dentist.

For example, if you’re frustrated by stubborn stains in your enamel that you can’t seem to brush away, they can provide a take-home kit with professional-grade supplies to brighten your grin on a schedule that works for you. They include ultra-concentrated gels designed to mitigate sensitivity and custom-fitted trays for an optimal application and accurate results.
