You’re planning to get a dental cosmetic treatment, which means you’ll be having a consultation with your dentist. That’s fine and all, but how do you prepare for a cosmetic dentistry consultation? What sort of things should you be asking about? It’s hard to think of good questions sometimes! If you’re having a bit of a brain block, keep reading – and write down these 4 questions.

#1. What Are the Pros and Cons of Each Treatment Option?

Depending on what your smile goals are, there could be multiple treatment options that will suit your needs. Ask your dentist to run you through the pros and cons of each option, and take notes as they talk. Maybe you’ll immediately know which dental cosmetic you’d prefer, or maybe you’ll need some time to think about it. Either way, you’ll be glad you have a clear list of pros and cons.

#2. Will I Need Preliminary Treatments?

Part of your consultation involves your dentist performing an oral exam. This is so they can identify any signs of cavities or gum disease before you start your treatment. If your oral health isn’t quite at 100%, you might need preliminary treatments like crowns, fillings, or gum disease therapy in order to avoid complications with your cosmetics. So it’s a good idea to confirm with your dentist what you may or may not need.

#3. What Does the Treatment Process Look Like?

Dental cosmetic treatments are pretty minimal, but no doubt you’ll still want to know what the general process will look like! Each treatment is a little different, and each patient’s needs are unique; you shouldn’t expect your plan to look identical to someone else’s. Make sure you and your dentist are on the same page – and that you have an idea of how your calendar might be affected.

#4. How Much Can I Expect My Treatment to Cost?

If you’re on a budget, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. Your consultation is the perfect time to ask your dentist how much your treatment could cost, because the oral exam will enable them to provide a more accurate estimate. And if you’re worried about being able to afford your dental cosmetic treatment, don’t be afraid to ask if your dentist accepts dental insurance or flexible financing plans.

It’s not always easy to know what you want to ask during a cosmetic dentistry consultation. These four questions will cover most of what you absolutely need to know; make sure to include them in your notes, and you’ll be well-prepared for your appointment!
