If so, you are no doubt in the process of learning about your condition and how to manage it in a way that optimizes your health and quality of life. Still, you might wonder if your diagnosis is something that you will have to manage for the rest of your life, or if it will ever go away. This blog post provides information to help you have a realistic outlook for the future.

Sleep Apnea Does Not Go Away on Its Own

OSA is typically the result of anatomical issues within the upper airway that lead to breathing obstructions during sleep. Unless something happens to change how those tissues behave, sleep apnea will not go away. It is not like a mild cold or other common illnesses that resolve with on their own with just a bit of time and patience.

Can You Make Sleep Apnea Go Away?

Even though sleep apnea will not go away on its own, are there steps you can take to make it go away? Well, maybe.

For example, if your OSA is related to obesity, losing weight might significant reduce or even eliminate your symptoms. Some pregnant women find that their symptoms go away after they give birth and their hormones start to return to normal levels. And lifestyle changes, such as sleeping on your side or limiting alcohol and caffeine, can also have a positive effect. In some cases, individuals choose surgical intervention to fix anatomical issues that cause OSA, and as a result, they experience long-term benefits.

Keep in mind that even if you take steps to make sleep apnea go away, you should not stop treatment without consent from your medical team. They may recommend a sleep test to measure the quality of your sleep before you receive approval to modify or stop your regular treatment.

Long-Term Management of Sleep Apnea

Most people with OSA find that they have to manage it long-term. This should not feel like a burden. After all, solutions like the use of a CPAP or custom dental appliance are usually easy to integrate into your routine after a short adjustment period. If you find that you have ongoing difficulty with your prescribed treatment, consult with your care team. Minor adjustments to your appliance might make a big difference in your comfort.

It is important to be realistic about your long-term prospects for managing sleep apnea. It probably will not go away. Fortunately, you can take steps to control it while still enjoying a high quality of life.

Meet the Practice

Dr. Thomas Bagley is a skilled sleep apnea dentist and a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.
